What is Koios Medical?
The Koios Medical team develops AI software to assist radiologists interpreting ultrasound images, using deep learning methods to help diagnose cancer and streamline diagnostic workflows.
Our medical image analysis platform uses advanced artificial intelligence algorithms in the early detection and treatment of disease while also reducing the need for biopsies of benign tissue. Our patented technology saves physicians time, streamlines reporting, improves accuracy, and reduces healthcare costs substantially.
Our first product, Koios DS Breast, focuses on breast cancer diagnosis assistance. We are also extending this deep learning platform to other diseases: thyroid, lung, prostate, and even skin cancer.
Koios DS version 1 has 510(k) clearance; the FDA considers our platform “safe and effective” for use in assisting skilled physicians in analyzing breast ultrasound images.

What does Koios mean?
In Greek mythology, Koios is the Titan god of foresight, intellect, and wisdom. Seems pretty spot on to us.
How do I pronounce “Koios”?
The traditional Greek pronunciation is “KEE-aws” while the modern English version is typically “KOY-ohs.” Either is fine. We like them both!
What is the "DS" in Koios DS?
Decision support (DS) is the term applied to our software. We are a digital assistant to physicians and technologists. What we do is also referred to as “machine augmented diagnosis.” We think DS is a much better acronym.

How does Koios DS work?
Our team has spent the past six years “training” Koios DS using a massive database of medical images, pathology data, and machine learning expertise. It’s able to analyze image data and give physicians a powerful weapon in the fight against cancer. Simply install Koios DS alongside other tools (e.g., PACS) used in your practice and click on the Koios Owl to launch the application. Simply drag the owl over the region of interest and Koios DS provides feedback useful for diagnosis.

How is Koios DS different or better than the competition?
We applaud and encourage all companies helping physicians use machine learning. We don’t know of another company with an FDA-cleared solution for assisting with the diagnosis of breast ultrasound images. We do not currently offer a detection solution, but we are working on it. Today we focus only on breast, and we analyze only ultrasound images (not MRI, CT or mammography).
Is Koios DS available outside of the United States?

Our Results
What kind of results has Koios DS been proven to deliver?
When studies analyzed and compared physician performance alone versus physician performance with Koios DS, physicians using Koios DS demonstrated up to 20% fewer benign biopsies. Amazingly, Koios DS improved this performance without any reduction in sensitivity. In fact, physicians using Koios DS in the study improved sensitivity as well, catching up to 5% more cancers. That’s a lot!
How will Koios DS continue to improve with use?
Koios DS continuously “learns” from an ever-growing database of tens of thousands of radiological images linked to pathology results. As we work with more and more hospitals, systems, and radiology practices, we will augment our databases and improve our algorithms even further, making Koios ever more powerful with increased use.

What research was conducted to prove that Koios DS really works?
We have performed several research studies over the past few years. The published, peer-reviewed papers are available here. Each study demonstrated the improvements in physicians’ performance, with respect to both specificity and sensitivity, when using Koios DS.

What does Koios DS cost?
Pricing is based on your annual diagnostic exam volume and you receive a software license for unlimited use by your entire physician and technologist staff. Lives depend on accurate diagnosis so why restrict the use of Koios DS?
Does this AI technology threaten to take away jobs?
To the contrary. As physicians embrace machine learning, medicine is now requiring more data scientists, mathematicians, engineers as well as physicians, and new jobs and roles will be created, as well. Physicians will be able to spend more time with patients and less time analyzing raw images. Physicians ultimately must provide the clinical diagnosis and take numerous factors into account.
